Studying Mechanobiology & Aging in Soft Tissues
in the Department of Biomedical Engineering at Boston University
Musculoskeletal injuries have a significant impact on an increasingly aging population as these injuries often lead to pain, reduced mobility, and decreased independence. Tendon and ligament injuries account for 20-30% of all musculoskeletal injuries, yet their etiology and pathogenesis is unknown. Our work takes a novel approach to understanding soft tissue aging by identifying age-related changes in:
  • Cells, the surrounding extracellular matrix (ECM), and tissue mechanical function
  • The ability of cells to sense mechanical and biochemical cues through the ECM
  • The homeostatic regulation of ECM structure through remodeling
